“Acupuncturists Without Borders” – Public Health Care Training Program for Rural Doctors Held in Shanxi

July 1, 2014, Jincheng, Shanxi – Natural Path Academy in collaboration with Parinama Cultural Development Foundation successfully launched first Acupuncturists Without Borders program in Jincheng, Shanxi Province. Lasting for thirteen days, the program was held from June 13 to 26, 2014

During the field investigation in Lingchuan County, it was discovered that local doctors suffer from tough working conditions everyday. Fraught with substandard salaries, infrastructure and logistical challenges, and a lack of resources with which to serve patients, not only is work more difficult for doctors, but they end up also having to do farm work just to cover their own living expenses. As a result, many doctors choose to leave and work in faraway towns and cities, making medical costs higher for villagers and programs like Acupuncturists Without Borders more necessary.

Acupuncturists Without Borders aims to improve the medical environment of less-developed areas, and enable rural doctors treat patients in a low-cost yet effective manner. Combining theory and practical work, students are guided to master acupuncture beginning from proper consultation to pulse reading before finally, treatment in a span of two weeks. In Jincheng, three experienced academy doctors conducted classes including Energies of the Universe and Man, Principles of Energy and Blood (Qi and Xue), Six Paired Channels (Liu Jing) and their Regulatory Functions, Tendino-Muscular Channels (Jing Jin) and Luo-Connecting Vessels. Participants were composed mostly of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners: five doctors and several traditional Chinese medicine supporters from Jingcheng and neighboring areas.

Overall, the training program was received positively. Follow-up discussions among learners and instruction from teachers will be organized regularly in order to strengthen the effects of training.
